HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's image format from iOS 11 onward. It's space-efficient but not widely supported outside Apple's ecosystem. PNG works everywhere.
If you need transparency or are doing further editing: yes. For sharing on the web or attaching to emails: JPG is fine and 3–5x smaller.
Most are stripped during conversion (since PNG and HEIC have different metadata formats). If you need to preserve EXIF, use HEIC to JPG instead and the standard EXIF block survives.
